In recent years, technology has revolutionized the practice of surgery. As
part of this change, surgeon-performed ultrasound has become one of the
most integral parts of the surgeon’s clinical practice. It is not surprising to
observe this current surge of interest in ultrasound by general surgeons because
surgeons are highly motivated to provide the best possible care for
their patients, including the use of the latest technologic advances in diagnosis
and treatment. Furthermore, ultrasound equipment is compact, affordable
and user-friendly so that extensive training is not required to master
focused ultrasound techniques. Cost containment initiatives by patients,
clinicians and third-party payers have encouraged the use of modalities, such
as ultrasound, that save time and money. Considering the unique qualities
of ultrasound...noninvasive, portable, rapid and easily repeatable..., ultrasound
is especially suitable to the surgeon’s practice. The FAST has replaced
central venous pressure measurements for the detection of hemopericardium
and diagnostic peritoneal lavage for the detection of hemoperitoneum. Bedside
ultrasound detects a pleural effusion so well in critically ill patients that fewer
lateral decubutis X-rays are ordered. Ultrasound directed biopsy of breast
lesions is a common office procedure. Laparoscopic ultrasound allows for
tumor staging without formal celiotomy while ultrasound is an adjunct to

Birth outcomes have improved dramatically worldwide in the past 40 years. Yet there is still a large gap between the outcomes in developing and developed countries. This book addresses the steps needed to reduce that gap. It reviews the available statistics of low birth weight, prematurity, and birth defects; reviews current knowledge and practices of a healthy pregnancy, identifies cost-effective opportunities for improving birth outcomes and supporting families with an infant handicapped by birth problems, and recommens priority research, capacity building, and institutional and global efforts to reduce adverse birth outcomes in developing countries. The committee has based its study on data and information from several developing countries, and provides recommendations that can assist the March of Dimes, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and NIH in tailoring their international program and forging new partnerships to reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with adverse birth outcomes.

Mosby's is one of the biggest names in American medical reference. For 75 years flu victims in Fresno, syphilitics in Seattle, plague carriers in Peoria, and hypochondriacs in Hackensack have been checking its authoritative pages for the right terms, drugs, and treatments to go with their conditions. And now it's been made even easier to scope out your symptoms with the one-disc Mosby's Medical Encyclopedia CD-ROM, containing just about all there is to know in the field of contemporary medical expertise.
The format is admirably clear. A column on the left of the screen indicates the various available sources on the disc. Click on each to access the subsection you want. Most useful is perhaps the encyclopedia itself, which gives plain, lucid, informative definitions of some 20,000 medically related terms. Below the encyclopedia is a very handy drug guide, affording the scientific background and uses of multifarious pills, medicines, and remedies, from ibuprofen to Intaferon, temazepam to Tixylix. Equally interesting is the human atlas, which diagrammatically maps nervous, lymphatic, muscular, and digestive systems, amongst others. The on-disc Internet guide, which links you to pertinent Web sites and apposite net addresses, is pretty cool too.

In fact, there's so much information here it might prove slightly overwhelming for the layman, and in some ways the CD-ROM is aimed as much at professional users as the needy family or inquisitive individual. But for those willing to swallow the odd technical term, it's still pretty hard to think of a better single-disc medical dictionary on the CD-ROM market. --Sean Thomas
